John Gayle's Transition Programme

Maximise a young person's potential with mentoring

What is the programme?

John Gayle’s extensive career spans two decades, showcasing a remarkable dedication to youth mentorship, mental health support, and community intervention. With a specialised focus on managing behaviour and providing tailored support for vulnerable young people, John has consistently delivered transformative results, helping to re-engage and empower students and families alike.

Currently self-employed as a Mental Health and Behaviour Mentor, John has been providing specialised services since 2001, leveraging his comprehensive background in behaviourmanagement. In this role, he honed his skills in managing challenging behaviour and implementing restorative justice measures, often collaborating closely with community stakeholders, including the police and social services. John’s approach involves one-on-one mentoring and structured support, addressing not only academic re-engagement but also personal development and well-being.

A hallmark of John’s career has been his pioneering work in developing alternative provision for vulnerable students at risk of becoming NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training). By arranging workshops, creating customised timetables, and liaising with primary schools to support transitions, John has developed a holistic framework that supports young people’s reintegration into mainstream education or vocational pathways. His work involves comprehensive case management, safeguarding, and child protection, all of which ensure a safe and productive environment for his mentees.

Beyond his contributions to education, John has an impressive background in sports, specifically football. As a former professional player for clubs like Birmingham City FC, Wimbledon FC, and Coventry FC, he has a deep-rooted passion for the sport and has applied this expertise in various coaching roles.

John’s career exemplifies a rare blend of empathy, leadership, and specialised knowledge, making him an invaluable asset in any setting that seeks to support, uplift, and guide young people toward a brighter future. His proven track record of innovation and dedication to community welfare uniquely positions him to bring lasting impact to any organisation focused on transforming the lives of young people.

Testimonial

I had the real pleasure of working with John for a number of years, he was a real inspiration to all the students he worked with. John had a way of connecting with the students and making them feel secure. Often he worked with students that were struggling both academically and personally, and through working with them, he helped them to see there was a better version of themselves and then assisted the students in becoming this.
John was also a great member of the staff team, always compassionate and there to listen to others while also having a very contagious laugh which brightened up the office.

I feel lucky enough to count John as one of my friends.

Whole School Initiative

John has been working as a mentor for over 15 years and is passionate about supporting young people who need some additional guidance and direction through life. John has developed his mentoring program from a recognition that no one was there for him when he was growing up to show him that he had choices. For John it seemed natural for him to support young people facing some of the experiences that he had been through.

John has been working at THS with our young people for over a year, attending the school and supporting students each Thursday. His flexibility and passion in getting under the surface of our young people is admirable and his work for individuals attending out school.

Not only has John worked on a one to one basis he works with small groups, has delivered assemblies on gangs and knife crime and led sessions on British values and racism through our personal development curriculum.

John is a popular member of THS staff, with students respecting and responding well to him. His work has encouraged the students he works with to reflect on themselves and make positive steps towards changing attitudes and behaviours as well as attending school more frequently. We are delighted to have John working with us and we welcome his ongoing work as we look to further embed his role working with more young people and their families within our community
